Hello to my favourite bunch of Twits! September is just around the corner and that means we’ll soon be celebrating National Literacy Day and Roald Dhal Story Day…
So, how many references to Roald Dahl book titles can you pick out in my 2 minute blog?
To give you a head start, you’ve already heard one…
Ready?
Literacy isn’t cooked up in a chocolate factory, it’s not something you get from drinking a witch’s potion of giant peaches either. It takes a supportive education, hard work in childhood and continued enjoyment of reading and writing as an adult, whatever the content might be.
Does anyone know the average reading age of an adult in the UK? It’s equal to that of an 11-year-old.
So, don’t be a dirty beast, or a revolting writer, be champion of the world and put your magic fingers to use writing something everyone will enjoy, that adds value to your services and makes someone smile or feel better about their enormous crocodile of a problem!
It’s a fact that literacy is lacking and if you want your message to be easily understood by everyone, don’t baffle people with jargon or aim to impress them with fancy words – just tell it how it is, write how you read. On the other hand, don’t patronise your audience if they want the fancy words and need the techno talk!
It’s a difficult balance it’s true, but at the end of the day if you write your stories the way people like to read them, then you’ll become a big friendly giant of knowledge to your audience!
